MasterCard Memorial Cup: Sea Dogs Advance To Memorial Cup Semi-Finals
Shawinigan, Que - The Saint John Sea Dogs booked their ticket to the 2012 MasterCard Memorial Cup Semi-Finals on Wednesday night as they defeated the Shawinigan Cataractes 4-1 at Centre Bionest in Shawinigan.
Jonathan Huberdeau led the way for the Sea Dogs as he found the back of the net twice while Stanislav Galiev and Ryan Tesink also scored goals for Saint John in the game.
Anton Zlobin netted the lone goal for the Cataractes in the contest.
Saint John got the scoring started in the game as Jonathan Huberdeau scored his third goal of the tournament at 4:39 of the first period, Charlie Coyle was given the lone helper on the goal.
The Sea Dogs would make the score 2-0 before the first period was over as Stanislav Galiev netted his first goal of the tournament on a 5-on-3 power play at 19:29, Nathan Beaulieu and Jonathan Huberdeau picked up the assists.
Ryan Tesink gave Saint John a three goal lead as he found the back of the net beating Cataractes goaltender Gabriel Girard at 16:05 of the second period, Nathan Beaulieu was given credit for the lone helper.
Shawinigan would cut the Sea Dogs lead to two on the power play as Anton Zlobin scored his second goal of the tournament at 18:55 of the middle frame, Morgan Ellis and Michael Chaput found the score sheet with the assists.
Jonathan Huberdeau gave Saint John some insurance as he tapped home his second goal of the game (fourth of the tournament) into an empty net at 18:28 of the third period, Danick Gauthier and Charles-Olivier Roussel recorded the helpers.
Mathieu Corbeil-Theriault made 30 saves in the win for Saint John, his record improves to 2-1-0-0 while Gabriel Girard turned aside 34 of 37 shots in the loss, his record falls to 1-2-0-0.
The next game on the MasterCard Memorial Cup schedule is the Tie-Breaker game tomorrow night at 7pm (EST) as the host Shawinigan Cataractes battle the Western Hockey League champion Edmonton Oil Kings with the winner meeting Saint John on Friday night in the tournament's Semi-Finals.
