MasterCard Memorial Cup: Gormley Leads Cataractes Past Knights

Shawinigan, Que - Brandon Gormley led the way with a pair of goals and an assist for the Shawinigan Cataractes as they beat the London Knights 6-2 on Sunday night at the 2012 MasterCard Memorial Cup in Shawinigan.

Along with Gormley finding the back of the net, Michael Bournival, Loik Poudrier, Pierre-Olivier Morin and Michael Chaput each scored single markers for the Cataractes.

Josh Anderson and Andreas Athanasiou both found the back of the net for the Knights in the contest.

London opened the scoring in the game as Josh Anderson tipped in his first goal of the tournamet at 10:47 of the first period, Tommy Hughes was given the lone assist on the goal.

Just as a 5-on-3 power play finished for the Shawinigan Cataractes, Michael Bournival tipped in a Brandon Gormley point shot beating Knights goaltender Michael Houser at 16:23 of the opening period, Gormley along with Michael Chaput picked up the helpers.

Just 57 seconds into the second period, Brandon Gormley gave the Cataractes a 2-1 lead as he found the back of the net for his first goal of the tournament, Jonathan Narbonne and Kirill Kabanov were awarded with the assists.

Shawinigan would take a two goal lead as Loïk Poudrier buried his first goal of the tournament shorthanded at 10:37 of the second period, the goal was unassisted.

Less then a minute later, The Knights would answer as Andreas Athanasiou netted his first goal of the tournament on the power play beating Cataractes goaltender Gabriel Girard, Scott Harrington and Max Domi were given credit for the helpers.

Pierre-Olivier Morin put the Cataractes up by two again as he fired a wrist shot beating Houser high on the glove side at 3:20 of the third period for his first goal of the tournament, the goal was unassisted.

Shawinigan would get some insurance on the power play as Brandon Gormley fired home his second goal of the game (second of the tournament) at 9:44 of the final frame, Michael Chaput and Michael Bournival found the score sheet with the helpers.

Michael Chaput then made the score 6-2 for Shawinigan as he scored his third goal of the tournament into an empty net at 18:15 of the third period, Kirill Kabanov and Loik Poudrier added the assists.

Gabriel Girard made 24 saves in the win for the Cataractes, his record improves to 1-0-0-0 while Michael Houser turned aside 27 of 32 shots in the loss for the Knights, his record falls to 1-1-0-0.

The next game on the 2012 MasterCard Memorial Cup schedule is tomorrow night at 7pm (EST) as the Saint John Sea Dogs battle the Edmonton Oil Kings from the Bionest Centre in Shawinigan, Quebec.
