President's Cup Final: Sea Dogs Take 2-0 Series Lead In President's Cup Final
SAINT JOHN, NB - The Saint John Sea Dogs took a 2-0 series lead in their best of seven Quebec Major Junior Hockey League President's Cup Final series as they defeated the Rimouski Oceanic 3-2 on Saturday night at Harbour Station.
After a scoreless first period, Danick Gauthier opened the scoring in the game for Saint John as he fired home his 10th goal of the playoffs beating Oceanic goaltender Jacob Gervais-Chouinard on the glove side at 6:12 of the second period, Jason Seed and Kevin Gagné picked up the assists.
Just 50 seconds later, Detroit Red Wings prospect Tomas Jurco made the score 2-0 for Saint John as he scored his 10th goal of the playoffs, Spencer MacDonald and Charlie Coyle were given the helpers.
Charlie Coyle gave the hometown Sea Dogs a three goal lead as he netted his 15th goal of the playoffs on a shorthanded penalty shot after he was taken down by Oceanic forward Alex Belzile on the breakaway at 11:36 of the middle frame.
The Oceanic would cut the Sea Dogs lead to two at 15:50 of the second period as Petr Straka found the back of the net for his eighth goal of the playoffs, Francis Beauvillier and Pier-Luc Pelletier recorded the assists.
Petr Straka would again find the back of the net with 1:05 to play in the third period as he scored his second goal of the game (ninth of the playoffs), Jakub Culek and Jérôme Gauthier-Leduc were awarded with the helpers.
Mathieu Corbiel-Theriault made 14 saves in the win for Saint John, his record improves to 14-0-1-0 while Jacob Gervais-Chouinard turned aside 29 of 32 shots in the loss for Rimouski, his record falls to 10-4-1-0.
Game three of the President's Cup final goes Wednesday night at 7:30pm (ET) from the Rimouski Colisee.
