President's Cup Final: Phillips Scores Double OT Winner As Sea Dogs Take Game One Over Oceanic
SAINT JOHN, NB - Zack Phillips was the hero in Saint John on Friday night as he scored the double overtime winner at 10:18 to lift the Saint John Sea Dogs to a 3-2 victory over the Rimouski Oceanic in game one of the 2012 President's Cup final at Harbour Station.
With the win the Sea Dogs take a 1-0 series lead in their best of seven QMJHL President's Cup playoff series with the Oceanic.
Nathan Beaulieu got the scoring started in the game as he netted his fourth goal of the playoffs just 45 seconds into the first period, Zack Phillips and Charlie Coyle were given the assists.
Just seconds later, Tomas Jurco made the score 2-0 for the hometown Sea Dogs as he scored his ninth goal of the playoffs beating Oceanic goaltender Jacob Gervais-Chouinard on the five-hole, Stanislav Galiev and Danick Gauthier picked up the helpers.
The Oceanic would cut the Sea Dogs lead to one as New Maryland, New Brunswick native Peter Trainor buried his 12th goal of the playoffs on the power play at 5:52 of the second period, Alex Belzile and Alexandre Mallet added the assists on the goal.
Alex Belzile tied the game up at two for Rimouski as he tapped in his seventh goal of the playoffs on the power play at 13:20 of the middle frame, Alexandre Mallet and Jérôme Gauthier-Leduc were given credit for the helpers.
Zack Phillips would later find the back of the net to give the Sea Dogs the 3-2 victory at 10:18 of the second overtime period, Tomas Jurco and Charles-Olivier Roussel picked up the assists on winner.
Mathieu Corbiel-Theriault made 38 saves in the win for Saint John, his record improves to 13-0-1-0 while Jacob Gervais-Chouinard turned aside 41 of 44 shots in the loss for Rimouski, his record falls to 10-3-1-0.
Game two of the series goes Saturday night at 6pm (ET) from Harbour Station in Saint John, New Brunswick.
