Cataractes' Gormley Avoids Serious Injury
Shawinigan Cataractes defenceman Brandon Gormley on Saturday afternoon just barely avoided a serious injury when Saint John Sea Dogs right winger Charlie Coyle's skate cut the 19 year old on the left side of this neck just missing his jugular.
The freak injury happened during the final seconds of Saturday's game between Shawinigan and Saint John at the Bionest Centre in Shawinigan, Quebec. Gormley was rushed to a local Shawinigan hospital by ambulance.
The Phoenix Coyotes prospect was wearing a neck guard at the time of the incident.
"I knew I was cut" said Gormley during an interview with the Guardian newspaper sports reporter Marcel Wander Wier. "I took off my glove and put pressure on it right away."
The bleeding to Gormley's neck stopped prior to his arrival at the hospital, where he was forced to wait six hours due to multitude of emergency incidents. The 6-2, 190-pound blue-liner from Murray River, Prince Edward Island eventually received two stitches following the six hour wait.
Gormley hopes to be back in the Cataractes lineup on Wednesday night when the club hosts the Bathurst Titan at 7pm (EST) from the Bionest Centre.
