My Take On Some Of The Proposed Rule Changes
Personally, I don't see the need for any changes. However, I've learned in life that change is inevitable, so it's best to learn how to adapt. So here is what I think of a few of the proposed rule changes.
Eliminating the Shootout: I just looked at TSN and 70% of people polled said they were in favor of eliminating the shootout. I understand why purists would want this, but people have gone so far as to calling the SO "boring". I simply do not understand this, especially when the SO goes into sudden death rounds. Some of the best games I have seen have ended in a SO. Obviously, receiving no points for a loss of any kind would make the SO more relevant, and would heighten the drama. However, many teams would not make the playoffs if points for making it past regulation were removed. 3 on 3 after 4 on 4 might be interesting, but it is a bit gimmicky. However, adding 3 on 3 or no points for a loss, or both, would completely change the complexion of the SO, in a positive way. Bottom line: Keep the SO, and make whatever changes necessary to make post-regulation play more exciting.
Adding More Face off dots: NO!!!!!!! Are you kidding me? Who could possibly think this was a good idea? Everyone knows where to go for a face off. Bottom line: Stupid idea
Whistle blow starts play instead of puck drop: I guess this would cut down on false starts, since there won't be a stupid linesman screwing around, basically teasing everybody. Bottom line: Fine with me
Hybrid Icing: I say no to this and no to automatic. Forwards often beat dmen to get possession of the puck and create scoring chances as a result. Hand out suspensions to players who hit from behind. Races and battles for the puck are exciting, and are an important part of hockey. Bottom line: Touch icing should stay.
