Rangers to make play for Forsberg?

The New York Post is reporting that the New York Rangers will be scouting Peter Forsberg when the future NHL Hall of Fame center plays in the Karjala Cup, taking place in Sweden and Finland over the weekend. Forsberg’s play in this tournament will give NHL teams the notion whether he has recovered from his injured right foot.

“Yes, we have interest in Forsberg,” Ranger GM Glen Sather said. “From the reports we’ve been getting, the foot is much better than it was a year ago. We’ll scout him at the tournament and see what, if anything develops. But I’ve always liked Peter and I’ve always been interested in finding a way to bring him to New York, if possible.”

Whether Forsberg looks like he did in his prime or whether he’s lost a step, cap space will be the deciding factor on what NHL team, if any, will sign the 36 year-old forward. When Sather was asked what factors will come into play when possibly signing Forsberg, he responded, “I’d have to say a lot of that would probably depend on money.”

The Rangers will battle the upstart Edmonton Oilers tonight in Alberta.
