The Ottawa Citizen is reporting that the NHL has served the NHL Players’ Association a grievance in regards to the $4-million US signing bonus Ottawa Senators owner Eugene Melnyk had to pay forward Dany Heatley on July 1, just days after Heatley vetoed a trade that would of sent him to the Edmonton Oilers.

The skinny of the issue, Melnyk wants his money back.

Heatley demanded a trade after the 2008-09 season but had a non-movement clause in his contract, meaning he didn’t have to go to a team he felt wasn’t a true contender.

Where this drama would go from here is anyone’s guess but it sure will be fun to follow. Heatley was of course eventually traded to the San Jose Sharks in exchange for Milan Michalek and Jonathan Cheechoo
